After 22 years as a police officer, Barry Swanson of the Jamestown Police Department ended his law enforcement tenure Thursday.
Swanson retired after working in many capacities with the department, ending his time there at the rank of captain.

Swanson was born in Jamestown and grew up in Busti, knowing that he wanted to be a police officer.
"There are a lot of things people want to do, and I have to tell you I have always wanted to be a police officer, since I was a kid," he said.
He said that an experience early on cemented his desire to help people.
"I had an experience on my grandparents' farm, where there was an individual who had done something there, and there was a sheriff's deputy that had arrived and he was able to deal with this guy who was very unruly and turn around and get on one knee and talk to us kids," he said. "I just thought that was so cool."
Swanson attended Jamestown Community College.
"I got to know more people in law enforcement and more people my age that wanted to pursue the same type of career," he said.
