Intensive investigation led detectives to suspect in Lin case

The blood did not belong to the accused's family but to four people, three of whom were almost certainly members of the same family. Police believe this must have come from the crime scene.
The phone taps on the Xie home also allegedly bore fruit. Police say they recorded Mr Xie, 47, coaching his wife and a younger woman about what to say and what questions to answer if they were interviewed by police.
He allegedly told the women that the reason police were focusing their attention on him was that the grandparents of Min Lin, the father of the murdered family, had told police he was responsible.
Yet despite the sophistication of the police case, there are still questions surrounding the alleged killer's motive for the crimes.
According to Mr Xie's defence barrister, Graham Turnbull, SC, he and his family had a close relationship with the Lin family. The night before the murders the Xie family had dinner with three of the victims, a practice that occurred virtually every week.
