MURFREESBORO Job seeker Penny Duncan hopes to be among the 1,150 employees Amazon.com hires to operate a sort center next year on Joe B. Jackson Parkway.
"I need a job," said Duncan, noting she's a 57-year-old woman with a good work ethic who graduated from MTSU with a degree in finance and insurance in 1991. "I'm looking for a new career."
Gov. Bill Haslam announced Thursday that the state and local governments had reached final agreements with Amazon, a Fortune 500 online retailer, on starting new operations at distribution centers in Murfreesboro and Lebanon.
Rutherford County Mayor Ernest Burgess was pleased to hear the Amazon news on a day when the county's latest monthly unemployment numbers also dropped to 7.1 percent in November, a full point lower than the 8.1 percent measured November 2010.
"That's a nice Christmas present for all of us," Burgess said during a Thursday phone interview.
The Amazon jobs in Murfreesboro will pay a median of $16.50 per hour.
