According to investigators, Bakkar was Khora Badshah's main supplier at Sangrampur area of Magrahat. A probe has revealed that all the victims died after having hooch supplied by Badshah, who controlled the illicit liquor trade in a vast stretch of Diamond Harbour subdivision. Police believe Badshah was the frontman of dreaded South 24-Parganas criminal Selim Laskar, who was earlier arrested by CID from Geokhali. "We are probing Laskar's role in the trade," a CID officer said.
"Badshah and his three wives were involved in the trade," said an investigator.
Bakkar, who started his career as a hooch carrier, later turned into a key supplier for Badshah. During interrogation, Bakkar reportedly told investigators that he had invested in small hooch-manufacturing units at remote villages of Gocharan. His men used to collect the liquor from these units and take it to Badshah. Police suspect Bakkar was trying to take over the trade from Badshah.
