Saginaw police begin sending letters to B&E victims whose cases reach dead end

SAGINAW — While Gil Grissom and Horatio Caine — characters from the hit TV series, “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” — have never stepped foot in the Saginaw Police Department headquarters, the fictional gumshoes have influenced at least one public safety initiative in the city, officials say.
Victims of breaking-and-entering crimes in December began receiving letters from Saginaw police informing them their cases will not receive additional investigation, officials say. City employees have mailed about 20 such letters since last week, Detective Sgt. Joseph Dutoi said.
Saginaw Assistant Manager for Public Safety Phil Ludos, charged with overseeing both the police and firefighting forces, said the mailing effort was conceived in part to quash myths that shows such as “CSI” perpetuate.
